Scenes from Howlong and nearby attractions

Howlong now has it's own domain and Web Site; visithowlong: HERE

howlong entry sign

As you arrive from Albury, down the Riverina Highway, you will see this sign, on your left, just outside the Howlong Golf Club partially seen behind. There's a good motel to stay at, nestling beside the Club. Nice tucker at the club on various nights.

Driving into Howlong, the Main Street is lined with trees sort of funnelling you into the useful places like pubs, the bakery and shops. Keep looking on your left down the line of trees and see the sportsground. The UFO seen often visits.

The Main Street proper. The Howlong bakery is on the right and makes all sorts of yummy cakes and bread. Stay awhile and sample their wares.

An IGA Supermarket resides beside the bakery. The Hume Building Society, a Chemist further down and a Newsagent on the corner.

Another UFO is inquisitive?

As you prepare to leave Howlong you have the choice:
  • turn right for Corowa
  • or left for the wineries of Rutherglen
  • or: -----------
howlong post-office crossroads
howlong ww1 memorial
--- go across and have a look at the place where the Howlong World War 1 memorial honouring the townsmen never arriving back home, was. It got moved to Lowe Reserve.
From where the memorial was, look across the road at the Howlong Post Office dating back to around 1897. It is now a B & B, as a new Post Office has been built next to the bakery.

Wander across and make a 'phone call home from the 'phone booth. Then wander down past the bakery to send a postcard back home from the Post Office.

Look back at the Main Street , the evening 'Rush Hour" is in progress!!

Wonder, ---- and then turn right (from this view) for the wineries.

Some 80 metres after you turn there's Mac's small overnight hostel on your left.

You can come back and stay for $AUS50 per room per night.

This bridge is new. The old one Heritage listed.

Interrupt your journey that's started two minutes ago.

Stop and look back, then take the first left and have a look at the Murray river running through the Howlong Wetlands in Lions Park.

Get your fishing rod out (if you have a licence)

There's some BIG Murray cod in them murkey waters!

Then on to the wineries.

As you travel you can stop every ten minutes or so and sample the fruits of the land.
(Get the missus to drive - you'll be over zero-point-zero-five!!)

There are too many wineries to cover here so just a few pictures

Cook your own BBQ, Jazz on first & third Sundays.
So, what's left? Maybe a map.
Well here's one to help thanks to Rutherglen Touring Guide. I hope they won't mind.
