The following information is supplied in good faith to help those interested in "Going ISDN." It should not be taken as absolutely correct. The reader should consult Telstra's and Bigpond's current FAQs to confirm the following comments. Early research was helped by information posted on Simon Wright's excellent "Whirlpool." Another useful reference is HERE: iwishihad takes no responsibility for the currency of the following data as plans change very fast.

What is 'Standard' ISDN?:

You get two high-quality digital lines, '64 KBits/sec each' to send digital data over, "permanently" connected. This will let you surf the Internet at @ 16 KBytes/second speed IF you use both lines (128 KBits/sec) at the same time and about 8 KBytes/sec if you use one (64 KBits/sec). (Note that a 56 Kbits/sec modem will give you @ 5 Kbytes/sec depending on your distance from the telephone exchange.)
The cost for the above digital data transfers will be 30c per hour for one line and 60c per hour for the two IF you are not sending digital data over long distances. This will cost MORE.
You will also get two analogue telephone lines that are also charged at timed calls.

So, what use is this? It's Costly!
